Rubric for writing narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.


A (90-100%) Exceeds Expectation
Purposefully orients the reader by setting out an engaging problem, situation or observation while skillfully establishing point-of-view and introducing a narrator and/or characters

Expertly develops the plot using a variety of techniques to sequence events that build on one another to create a sense of mystery, growth, suspense, or resolution toward a coherent whole

Skillfully and creatively uses sophisticated word choices, precise details and sensory language (imagery) to vividly convey experiences, setting and characters


B (80-89%) Meets Expectation
Orients the reader by setting out a problem, situation or observation while establishing point-of-view and introducing a narrator and/or characters

Effectively develops the plot using techniques to sequence events that build on one another to lead toward a particular outcome

Capably uses word choices, details and sensory language (imagery) to convey experiences, setting and characters


C (70-79%) Needs Improvement
Sets out a problem, situation or observation while attempting to establish point-of-view; attempts to introduce a narrator and/or characters. 

Development of plot is limited; sequence of events may be disconnected and / or may not build upon one another to create a coherent whole.
