Terror and Tragedy

Over the next week we will be exploring how Bram Stoker carefully arranges Dracula to play upon our deepest fears and desires, and we will also consider what Stoker's novel reveals to us about deep human conflicts and preoccupations that we all share (see notes on "The Human Condition" to be given on Monday).  After a short unit on Dracula, we will be moving on to The Crucible, which is a tragedy.

Given the material we will be reading, it's worth asking ourselves a simple question: why are people so attracted to stories designed to terrify us or make us sob in despair?  What brings hoards of people to the theater to watch The Conjuring or watch Titanic on repeat?  What does this say about us?

Please respond with a standard open response, due on Tuesday.  Thanks, and don't forget to hang some garlic in your room before bed.

  1. All around the world horror movies and books are created or published.people love these for the simple reasons, some people like them, scary, and some people even think there funny. Probably the top reason is for people to get a good scare. People love scary movies because they are entertaining and some times make people laugh. I honestly love horror movies and reading scary stories because they keep the reader on edge and always wonder what the next page or scene will bring.

I'm honestly not a reader but I do read a lot and my favorite genres are horror and survival. So basically everyone has their own ways they either like horror or don't like horror and Some people could care less. Horror brings people to watch the movies even knowing it will give them a little scare but they also know its not real and that's why they come its just something fun to do.

  2. The question why people are so attracted to stories that are created to terrify or put us in distress can not be explained when looking at humans as a whole, for it has to do with the individual him or her self. These stories have a negative but at the same time positive effect on people. Why is it for some of us horror movies are unbearable to watch and others watch them with ease and enjoy them? Its kind of counterintuitive. What I mean by that is humans as a whole want to be healthy and live life with pleasure, but at the same time we love to watch or read just the opposite of that. One reason why we put our self through these stories is for the "happy ending" that assures you that everything's okay, but a lot of stories don't have theses endings. Often movies and books end worst then they started, and we are accustom to hearing of these unsatisfying endings. An alternative reason could be that we love to be left with questions and an open plot that we can make in our head of what could or has happened. To me stories that don't resolve the conflict and leave you sitting there saying "what the hell just happened?" are the most satisfying. A third reason could be the rush that we get when we are startled or on edge. These stories 99% of the time are still just stories, and at a curtain age when you realize this its comforting to know nothing that your watching or reading about is going to happen to you. Now, that more explains the horror stories of things such as paranormal activity, masked murderers, creatures, ect. Stories that make people want to cry are cleaver in a way, because it brings humans in contacted with there more innocent and pure side. I believe people are so attracted to these films and books because it lets them feel things they aren't used to be feeling on a regular basis, putting us in touch different sides of our self's.

  3. People of all countries, races, and genders across the world are attracted to stories designed to terrify us or make us sob in despair. There are several reasons why we are attracted to stories of this nature. One reason is because when someone is reading a horror story, it allows the reader to put themselves in the shoes of the affected or conflicted character, and allows the reader to experience the same emotions, and try to think of any possible ways to get out of harms way. This can be a fun way to test your survival skills and to prepare for a potential real life situation involving danger. Also, people just enjoy the feeling of being scared, even though no real danger is present, except for the potential of a paper cut. Feeling scared is an intense emotion that is enjoyable as long as no real harm is done. Another reason is that reading a scary story can give a reader a sense of another creature or place that doesn’t exist in some cases, and allow them to think about it and imagine how different life would be like if it were real.

Hoards of people flood movie theaters to see horror and despair movies such as The Conjuring and Titanic due to many things. One cause is because people usually don’t watch movies alone, at least when they are at a theater. When experiencing a feeling of terror at the same time, and for the same reason, as a large group of people, it gets intense and is found thrilling by many people. Also, many of the reasons mentioned for stories apply to movies.

This says about us that we are attracted to scary things that in many cases are abstract and non real, but also present no form of real danger with the same feelings that comes with real danger. When it comes down to it, people like a good scare.

  4. The question of why people like to watch horror movies to provoke their own fear or why a person may want to watch a romance/drama to bring forth usually dormant emotion is very interesting. I mean, the exact answer is probably different between all human beings but there’s definitely a common variable in the equation. Clearly these type of movies are watched to bring forth a sort of strong emotion, whether it would be you crying on your couch with your dog while watching Titanic, or gripping your pillow so violently your knuckles are white while you are about to be frightened watching The Conjuring. People like this kind of thing because it’s something out of the ordinary! You don’t normally feel afraid while walking into English class, or well at least you shouldn't… Nor would you breakdown and become emotional while in math. People like to experience feelings that aren't in their normal routine.

These types of movies/novels also bring forth a level of suspense and excitement that you wouldn't come across in your normal routine. Waking into school in the morning is really not that suspenseful, because well, everything is already planned out for you! There is basically no variation, ever! Except maybe the occasional assembly or fire drill which still isn’t too awesome. On the other hand, in a horror film you’re always on the edge of your seat for your never sure when a demon is going to pop out from behind a wall, or a visually horrifying display will come across the screen. The anticipation of a scene like this but not knowing when it may come provides the suspense. It is the characteristic of these movies to bring out another you! The person who is never afraid and never emotional meets a whole new side of themselves when the feeling is forced out of them during one of these movies/novels. It’s almost like an addiction to the people. This is why these sorts of things can draw enormous crowds on opening night, or make you want to sit on your couch and watch time after time. Basically, this says something interesting about the human race as a whole. It shows that we like surprises and the feeling of raw emotion. Even though we aren't going to tell our friends that we like the feeling, it is clearly true! I mean why else would someone pay for a ticket to get scared or waste a Saturday watching romances. Obviously, you wouldn't. All in all, the feeling of overwhelming emotion makes us want to see these things.

  5. People all around the world are attracted to stories and movies that are designed to scare us and also make us sob in despair. There is not an exact answer why people like to be scared or be in despair, but what I think why people like these kinds of stories is for the thrill of it. I believe people like to think of themselves in the story as if this was happening to them and like to see what the character will do compared of what they would do themselves. The reader sometimes might be very close with one of the characters and if something were to happen to them this could make the reader upset and sad. People like these types of stories because it makes things feel more thrilling, more exciting, more attached to a character, and lastly just for the fun of being scared.

So many people rush to the theaters to see horror movies and movies that make you want to sob such as the "Conjuring" and "Titanic" because of a couple reasons. People like to go see scary movies with a big group because its fun to some people to get scared with all of your friends. Other people love to go see these types of movies for the thrill and and intensity of them. Another reason is sometimes someone will want to go see a movie that was based on there favorite book.

These are some of the reason why people like these type of stories and movies. What this tells us about ourselves is that we like to be scared, and we like to be sad sometimes. We like the thrill and intensity of these movies. These are things that make us enjoy reading or watching movies.

  6. Many people enjoy a good scare and even find horror amusing. People have different likes and attractions, and to a large amount of people around the whole world, horror is one of them. The main reason I think people enjoy horror so much is the fact that the human brain lets us think of whatever we want. In other words, it lets us imagine. Imagination is something that most humans experience in everyday life. When you become bored, you can space out and imagine anything you want. That's the key factor in imagination. You can imagine anything you want to no limitations. That is how most horror book (or movies) creatures were created, creative people creating new characters and monsters. Horror fanatics enjoy these creatures so much that they keep coming back for more. With no limitations, they can keep reading until they can't read anymore (develop some disorder or get old). That is what is great about the human mind. No matter how many fiction books/movies are produced, there are always more because the human brain is constantly functioning (until you die obviously) and creating new and improved ideas.

In conclusion, horror sparks people's interests as it shows how creative the human mind can be. It may be horrifying to some people, but there are people out there who laugh at it.

  7. What makes a horror story really favorable is how it immerses you into the setting. A really good horror story is able to describe the setting of the story in ways that can creep people out. One way to do this is to eliminate all positive influences. If the mood of the story if more, "glass half empty," then it is easier to make the tone of the story eerie, and overall, more enjoyable. With good imagery, you can feel like you are actually in the setting of the story.

The setting may be a major factor, but the characters are an even more important element of the story, and how it can be appraised. Characters should have distinct qualities, so that they are not all the same boring person. The reader or viewer should be able to connect to some of the characters due to some of their characteristics or the decisions they make in the plot. This way, the audience develops a bond or care for character(s). So if something bad were to happen to the character, usually death, it causes an emotional impact on those who liked the character. Some authors, such as Bram Stoker, take it even further. In Dracula, Not only does Lucy, an enjoyable character, die, but she becomes a demonic, twisted vampire. It can horrify people to see something so innocent and pure become such a horrible creature, and people enjoy that.

To truly make a memorable horror story, or any story, the audience has to feel like they are part of the plot. They have favorable characters in which they are saddened if bad things happen to them. People enjoy creating imagery of details in the setting, and that is what made stories such as Dracula so popular.

  8. If you think about it, why would somebody want to be so terrified they cannot even sleep at night or be so sad that it makes you cry? Maybe it is for the adrenaline rush that terror tends to give you. Maybe it is for validation that somebody's life is worse than yours. Maybe it is because you would like to see how it feels to walk in someone elses shoes. Whatever the case may be, it is sort of illogical; to watch movies or read books that are about someone else being in pain. But then again, what is logic? If everybodys opinion of things is different, than what is ordinary? People tend to connect with movies or books that best suit them. For example, a Shakespeare play may not interest someone who is on the football team as much as it would interest someone who is studying acting; just as the person who is into acting would probably not enjoy sports documentaries. So what does this say about our society that we have become so obsessed over horror movies and tragedies?

Horror stories are to teenagers and adults as fairy tales and Disney is to kids, it is familiar and it reflects what you experience everyday and how you view life. When you are a little kid, people sugar coat everything while they are around you. Then, little kids grow into teenagers and it is like a huge awakening and you no longer view the world through rose colored glasses; you begin to look at the scary and depressing side of things. This could be a reason why horror films and tragedies are so popular among teenagers and adults, just as Dora and Rapunzel is among kids. Sure, a man in a mask chasing you with a machete probably isn’t going to happen everyday to the average person (or at least hopefully not), but if you read deeper into it, maybe that represents something that is haunting you or stressing you out and will not leave you alone. A huge boat with tons of people on it isn’t going to crash into an iceberg everyday, but maybe an attraction to that kind of story signifies conflict in your life. There is not one answer to why people are so attracted to horror stories and tragedies because everyone is unique, but if you read between the lines and really think about it, you will be surprised by what you find.

  9. Everyone has a favorite topic that they enjoy reading or watching. The real question is, why do people enjoy reading horror stories or watching scary movies, if all it does is terrify them and put them in distress? I for one love to watch a scary movie even though I might have a nightmare or two after watching it. As kids get older, they don't enjoy the fairy tales or "happy ending" stories they once read as a child. They want to experience something much more exciting. In my opinion, the horror topic is number one on the list for excitement. I believe that people like to read books and watch movies that give them an adrenaline rush and make them really interested into what they are experiencing. That's something most other topics don't do besides the horror topic. Its tough to keep interest and stay in the story if your reading or watching something that is exciting or thrilling, but with a horror plot, its tough to not pay attention to what your reading or watching just because of the thrilling qualities it has.

  10. When questioning why people are so attracted to stories and movies designed to terrify us or instill despair in us, it is important to recall basic human nature. People are naturally drawn to a thrill or feeling of great suspense, and horror movies and books provide that with the lack of physical danger. "The Human Condition" tells us that as a human, we can consciously recognize the fact that we will someday meet our doom. Watching movies and reading books that involve death and fear are easy to relate to due to this common knowledge. People also feel a thrill from reading or watching horror because—for the most part—everyone feels safe in their environment most of the time. The feeling of danger that horror provides us with contradicts the comfortable environment that we experience every day, and change can be a thrilling experience. The fact that we as a people are so attracted to horror novels and movies shows that humans are experimental beings, and enjoy testing the limits of their emotional strength and bravery. For example, a large amount of moviegoers flocked to see the movie The Conjuring, as the movie grossed just under $42 Million dollars in the first weekend that it hit theaters. Obviously these consumers wouldn’t have spent their money on the movie if they didn’t want to be horrified, indirectly showing that they paid for the thrill of fear. All in all, it is apparent that people are always looking for a thrill, and the genre of horror is very good at providing just that.

  11. People are attracted to movies and books that bring them emotions that they do not experience daily. Fear and sadness are strong emotions that can overwhelm us, but we do not go through them on a regular basis. It sounds weird to say so but we may enjoy feeling fear and sadness because it’s something out of the ordinary.
Sadness is a feeling that makes us feel vulnerable and emotional. A lot of people aren’t emotional, and they don’t like to cry, but when it comes to a movie or a book they can become sensitive. When a book/movie moves you, it brings you to another world but it needs these strong emotions that are believable to do that. Other people may live lives of sadness and like to read books or watch movies they can relate too. Or other people don’t have much sadness in their life and that is the only way they can experience that kind of inactive feeling.
Fear is an emotion that takes you to a place of pure terror. Some people like the adrenaline that it gives them, making their heart rate go up and blood pressure rise. Others make like to overcome the feeling, like they are achieving something. That they are able to say they were brave enough to read that book or watch that movie. When you are taken into a place where you go pale, have to cover your mouth so you don’t scream it’s a feeling you don’t, or at least, shouldn’t have to experience every day.
Movies like “Titanic” and “The Conjuring” and books like “The Notebook” or books like the ones Stephen King writes are moving in a way that makes us attracted to them, mostly because we don’t encounter these emotions on an everyday basis.

  12. People everywhere are attracted to stories designed to terrify us or make us sob in despair. Even though some stories can horrify us we still continue to come back for more. The main reason people enjoy the terror of scary stories is for the pure thrill and exhilaration when you read them. Stories that frighten us give you an adrenaline rush that ends with a sense of relief. Reading, hearing, or watching a terrifying stories are also a way to experience terrifying things without actually risking your life and having that happen to you but as you’re reading or watching you feel like you’re there part of the story. While encountering a scary story it makes you feel alive and its entertaining and keeps your attention to find out what will happen next and if the main character will make it through it’s traumatic situation or not. We are attached to terrifying stories to explore the unknown and prove that the character can survive. Stories that make us sob in despair cause our emotions to build up and release at the end. Sad stories can also be relatable and makes people feel like we’re not all alone. People who are having problems in their life hearing about other peoples issues lets them forget about what's wrong and allows them to be sad for someone else instead. Hoards of people rush to the theater to watch The Conjuring or watch Titanic on repeat because they want to encounter these emotions that are caused from sad or scary movies. Movies such as these take them out of the real life and allow them to focus on something else rather than things that are scary or sad in their own lives and escapes them away from reality. This attachment and craving we have for these stories shows that a distraction from our problems and crying over someone else's tragedies actually help us feel happier because we go through a problem that is over once the story ends. This all shows that people like to feel scared and sad because they like to resolve the problem and overcome it due to our human nature our brains are ready to go through anything and solve all kinds of conflicts.

  13. People go and watch scary movies, and read horror books, like "It", or see or read tragedies, like "Romeo and Juliet". People are very attracted to these sorts of things because of the rush, and thrill they give to the person. Humans need and desire the release of adrenaline. It is almost like a form of a drug, the release of adrenaline almost causes a wave of pleasure. In a way these also take place of the human instinct or desire to hunt, and be hunted. Back in the day when there were still cavemen and humans had to hunt for their food and hide from their prey, they got the rushes of adrenaline from this. Nowadays, we still need to replenish that hunger for the feeling of adventure and danger but people like to do it in an environment where their brain knows that they are going to be safe and not have to worry about dying too much, hence the human condition also plays a role in why many people watch horror movies instead of going base jumping off a cliff or skydiving. Many people do not freely go skydiving because of the human condition. When we were not smart enough (cavemen) to know about death, humans were not really worried or thinking about what happens when you die and all that. But now since that plays a role in our life, many of us like a safe place where they can still experience the same rush. Also, it is a lot cheaper and easier to go to the movies than go jumping out of a plane. People need a place that gets their blood pumping and allows them to enjoy it without having to think about dying. Humans need the adrenaline because it is part of how we are hardwired. "The Conjuring" or "Titanic" give us that suspense and thrill that us people need.

  14. Humans everywhere around the world are very attracted and interested in the scary and terrifying things.I believe that this is because humans are interested in the things that we don't know and don't truly experience in our life. When it comes to death nobody can really be sure for what happens and it is natural for humans to wonder about the unknown. This is a fear for the fact that we know we will die and unlike many things don't even have an idea for what its like. This makes us scared and worried, but at the same time excited for what it could be like and imagining what its like too.Adventure stories can be more obvious though.

In stories like Dracula or The Titanic it involves death which makes people interested for the reasons above. These stories also provide an adventure and a life that many would want to live or maybe just experience but most never will. Then in fiction books nobody ever will. Then associated with the death some humans want to go when the times right obviously but go in an interesting one of a kind way. It is not knowing and living a life that they don't know and is different that make people so attracted to these books that get your adrenaline flowing in a safe place. It is almost like living that life with the guarantee you make it through the whole thing with nothing happening. That is the reason why humans are interested in books that cause fear.

  15. Most of us people love and enjoy the dramatic and horror films and literature. We like feeling of excitement we get when afraid or emotional because we as humans enjoy the rush. People do not always like the ordinary or normal, but cannot seem to stay away from the weird or extraordinary. Since I adore the horror and drama genres, it is easy to agree that these genres draw you into the story and purposely makes sure they have your every bit of attention. With horror stories, authors and movie producers do everything they can to make their work of art unordinary and insane as possible. The freakier the story is the more interested people get. In the drama genre, the writers’ goal is to make us cry because then we get emotionally attached to the stories and absolutely love it. Series always seem to be more successful because of this reason. Drama and Horror are probably the most popular genres out there because millions of people cannot stand to be away from the emotional and terrifying stories. These type of stories have a more interesting plot than any other type of genre by using suspense and unexpected twists. That is what makes the stories so incredible and interesting to us and make us wanting more. The truth is every human being cannot live without a little bit of drama and fright.

People will flock to the latest horror film, or watch Titanic for hours on end because sometimes terror and sorrow are the strongest feelings we have. Some will say that hope and happiness are stronger than these feelings, but when we're happy or feeling good, we're at our most vulnerable. We have so much to lose when we're in this sate of mind. When we have these feelings of terror and sadness, there isn't much that can make us feel any worse than we already do.

Since these feelings are so strong, they leave us thinking about the tradegy we have witnessed for a while. People tend to remember bad memories and times more than good ones. After see a sad or terrifying movie, we tend to think about the movie in relation ot our lives. The decisions or situations of the charcters in the moives might be similar to our own lives, which makes the movie seem that much more realistic. No one can experience everything life has to offer, but seeing and reading these tradegies makes it seem like we have experienced them first hand. We need exciting things to keep us interested in life and these horrifying and tragic stories stay with us and make us think long after these stories have ended.

  17. Very often, we will come across a novel, writing, or film that bases itself off of terror or despair. And for some strange reason, we (the audience) love it. These topics are meant to trigger different emotions. So why do we love watching/reading such terrible things? Maybe we like to compare our lives to those in the story. Does it make us feel better about our own lives, knowing we are not in the characters’ awful situation? Do we learn from the characters’ mistakes, and apply it to the real world? One thing we do know for sure is that it has to do with the human condition.

Humans have always marveled at the idea of novels or films pertaining to terror, despair, or other disturbing ideas. It all relates back to the “Human Condition” the awareness our imminent death. So, if we are always conscious of death, is that why we enjoy watching such depressing/terrifying things? Do we revel in the fact that we aren’t in the character’s position? That they are closer to death than we are? Another possibility is maybe we watch others destroy their lives and learn from their mistakes. Maybe we like experiencing emotions that we don’t often feel terror, horror or despair. And, for whatever reason, (most of us) will enjoy it.

  18. Many people are attracted to things that terrify us or make us sad. This is because these stories deal with potent emotions that many find interesting and unknown. While exploring the emotions, we can learn how our minds react to them and how society as a whole reacts to them. Stories like these also teach how to deal with these emotions and how to help others deal with them. Humans are attracted to things that interest them and are unknown. I think writers and filmmakers have realized this and have used it to make their stories more human by establishing a connection between the reader, watcher or listener. This works because humans are represented by emotion, it defines us, separates us from machines and the unnatural. When we are exposed to a story that uses emotion such as terror, or can move us to tears, we are attracted to it, because we all have a natural instinct of empathy towards others of our species.

Another big part of this attraction is the curiosity that people have. They want to know why this emotion is being caused, if it will ever end and how it can be stopped. In the stories, we can experience the emotion without actually living it. In other words the emotion is caused by the story for entertainment. People find the terror or sadness exciting or thrilling because for many of us it is an emotion that is repressed in our real lives. These stories can inspire potent emotions that can thrill us or bring us to tears and that is why people are so attracted to horror stories or tragedies.

  19. I think people are drawn to horror stories that scare them and movies that make them cry because they find it entertaining. They like going home and being scared out of their wits because it gives them something to think about other than what Obama is doing or what the score of the Patriot's game is. Some people like crying and believing something like true love or love at first sight is real and they use these movies and stories and try to model their own lives around it. One reason for horrors films and books is it sparks interest and gets people thinking. What if Dracula was real? What would you do if your child went out of the house came back with two little holes in his neck and said I was with the bloofer lady. For me I would be a little creeped out and tell him while he is in the hospital that you are never suppose to talk to strangers or something like that.
As people I think it shows that we are not complete robots. It makes it so we show emotion when we read or watch something like Dracula or Titanic. It shows us that we can be creative and that anyone can do it. It gives people on the SiFi channel a job when they go and try to look for vampires or big foot. Why do people watch them? We want answers and books like Dracula only spark our curiosity is he just a character in a book or is he in some way really out there?

  20. What interests humans in horror films is the suspense that comes with watching them. Horror films, unlike many other genres of movies, are extremely suspenseful. People love suspense because it absorbs their attention and entertains them which is what movies are made to do. Suspense from horror movies is a lot different than the suspense of waiting for your birthday or Christmas. One is joyful and exciting and the other is scared and nervous. At the same time though they both are suspense and work the same way. So technically you could say watching a horror film is like waiting for Christmas morning.

  21. I think that people are so attrached to books that are scary or sad because they're so intresting and compelling to the human mind that the severity of the sadness or terror is so great that we don't know what to do besides read it. These books just give us such a new feeling and teach us how to deal with it. It also helps us realize that this feeling is inside all of us and that we can express it. I think when we read books like this it's because we as humans can be very curious about things and wonder if they are really true, and this is why were read on is because we wont to figure out if there really is a monster under our bed or if someone really did die . I think terror and sadness bring out our true instictive selves and bring us to the edge of real or unknown.

I think we watch scary or sad movies for the same reason because we are so frightened or put into a state of sadness that all we know how to do is try to adress it by seeing the movie. We as humans love to try and see if we can push our selves to the brink of the unkown like we love to see scary movies because we want to prove to our selves that we can survive throught the terror and try to over come. And with sadness we feel so bad for the person on the movie screen that all we can do to help is try and listen and undestand their problem. This is why i think the brain likes to drive it self to dark places of terror or sadness to see if we can stand the things that are unkown to us before we see the films.

  22. Authors and writers like Bram Stoker write devastating and terrifying stories for entertainment for people. These stories attract people to them because “the human condition” has created the illusion of people wondering how an event happens when there is a sudden ending. For example, when you read the small summary on the back of a book that you have not read before, the summary does not state how the book ends. It simply states major details about events in the beginning and the middle of the book. This causes “the human condition” to be insightful and makes you curious to how the book ends, making you read the full book to see how it ends. Writers and other authors attract many people to see their movies and to read their books because your curiosity forces you to read a book or watch a movie in which you want to see the end. It makes you come up with your own debatable opinions about how the book or movie’s sequence of events will occur and how it will end. The main idea is that if writers write a story that has an active plot line, the book or movie will get as many views and readers as possible because it intrigues the reader/viewer.

Tragedies and devastating events also entertain people because it makes connections of their own lives. If people can relate to a story, the reader or viewer of the book or movie understands something better. The viewer is satisfied if they can relate to something rather than if they can not relate to something because “the human condition” has put them into the habit of feeling comfortable with doing something, even if the relationship between the devastating or terrifying event in a film or book is a bad one. The reader or viewer is still satisfied.

  23. People are attracted to movies that are designed to terrify them because it gives them a sense of adrenaline that keeps them coming back for more. People like to test their emotions by watching sad and scary movies. Those types of emotions tend to stick in someones head opposed to a movie with a happy ending. Movies and novels would be boring if all they had were happy endings. People are also attracted to these movies and books because they are out of the ordinary and something that doesn't happen in your everyday life. Everyone needs a little suspence in their life so that's why they turn to movies like the "Titanic" or "The Conjuring."

  24. People watch and read stories of destruction, horror, and terror for a few different reasons, all relating to the kind of person that is watching or reading the story. I believe that people who are dare devils read horror stories for the excitement. They like the thrill that the story gives them, and the clearer the picture of a scene or character, the better the thrill is. The response that these kind of people give after reading stories that are terrifying are ones of excitement and a fun type of danger.

I think that people who are selfless and worried about others read tragedy and terror stories for the happy ending, if there is one. They want to read about the great recoveries that characters make, and the obstacles that they push through. They aren’t looking to get a thrill from the story, but they are hoping to come out with a positive feeling.

I believe that the last type of people that read horror and terror stories are reading them to distract themselves from something that is happening in their life. The horror gives an extreme alternate reality for most people, and immerses them in a word that is extremely different from their own. When they are reading the story, their own problems are almost washed away because they are reading about the problems of others.

Overall, people seem to read terror stories to visualize a world that is more dangerous than theirs, one that has solutions that the readers couldn’t think of, and to just visualize something different from their boring, day to day lives. This shows that most people want a part of their lives to be in this horror and terror type of mood, but don’t want to express it because horror is a very intense type of personality that doesn’t allow room for other personality types.

  25. People are attracted to stories and movies that are about tragedy and despair because sometimes people can relate to the storyline, or at least try to relate in their own way. They would picture themselves in the situation in the book or story, and maybe they think putting themselves in the situation. By putting themselves in the situation, they think they can change the events and make the story how they would want it end. Like in the ending of Titanic, instead of just one person, the girl, holding onto the board, they could have shared the floating board and had a happier ending. The boy and the girl both may have lived or they both may have died together.

This why people that sometimes you want to read or watch tragic or despairing story lines to get a reality check. When somebody dies like in the Titanic, the audience or reader can relate it to a death that they have experienced in their own lives and it may somehow make them feel better. Such as, when the guy died in the Titanic someone might feel better thinking they’re aren’t the only ones having people die in their lives. Relating to a story line or to events in life somehow makes us feel better.
In conclusion, tragic and despairing movies and books can help us overall whether to escape for a moment of a day or a period of time.
