editor, an opinion piece, or a speech? How will your argument begin and
how will it end? Remember that irony works best when it builds: in
other words, it helps to begin by sounding vaguely reasonable and become
more and more extreme as it goes.

For the up and coming irony paper in which we have to write the opposite of what we feel about a social issue that we feel strongly about, I plan to write about bullying. My real opinion on bullying is that it is the worst pain that anyone can feel because unlike physical pain, the scars from being bullied remain implanted into your brain forever. I strongly believe that there should be more of an effort being put forth to put an end to bullying and greater consequences when someone is caught being a bully. Bullying leads to thousands of suicides among both teenagers and adults, so in my opinion being a bully is subsequent to being murderer. The type of voice that I will be adopting to write my paper is that of a jock who is a bully. The structure of my paper will be an opinion piece. It will begin by the jock telling a story of how he bullied, beat up, and sexually harassed a girl earlier this week and end with him exposing that the girl committed suicide and how he thinks that it is stupid and he should not get in trouble for it. As being a victim of bullying for years now, I think that it will be interesting to try to decode what goes through the sick and twisted minds of those who bully others for no other reason than to be cruel and feel superior for once in their lives.
ReplyDeleteFor our newest irony paper we will be writing ive chosen to right about the big topic of gun control.I will be acting or writing as if i was a man who hates guns but realizes guns are a great thing to own. I believe guns should be legal not only because i hunt but because i believe guns are a way of freedom and a way of life. Our constitution says people should have the right to bear arms so why should i not be allowed to bear arms because the government doesn't listen to what the people have to say.Most people think that people who own guns are trigger happy rednecks who live in the middle of no where and probably don't have families. But thats not true at all i live in gloucester and own guns and im responsible and have learned how to properly use a gun. people say guns kill people but really people kill people because they make stupid decisions that end up killing someone. The reason im doing this subject is because i want freedom to own a gun and i want to let people know the truth about guns and why people should not be afraid of guns but happy they were invented.
ReplyDeleteFor this irony paper, I have chosen the topic of an anti-choice for pregnant women. I will be talking as a priest from a church, who only believes in absence and purity till marriage. He doesn't believe in birth control, the morning after pill, abortion, or adoption. It will be written as an opinion piece. I personally believe that a pregnant women should be able to have her choices when it comes to that type of decision. In this paper I would start off by talking about why he doesn't believe it and then would end on what could come from taking all of these out of society today. I want to be able to show people, even if they don't believe in some of these things, they can see how it might help a girl in a difficult situation.
ReplyDeleteMy view on global warming is that it is an issue that everyone should address, but some people ignore it and do not listen to it. That is why i am writing an irony paper on how global warming does not exist. I think this will be a good topic to write about because there are actually some people who do not believe in this so it is a debatable topic. I will start my paper in that global warming might exist but it doesnt really or there are not enough statements to back it up. Then i will progress through the end of my essay to say that it does not exist and there is no reason whatsoever someone should believe it. Then i will move on to the middle of my paper where i will state the good things global warming could bring if it did end up happening and it might help our economy somehow. I will also increase my intensity slowly throughout the paper. This is my proposal to my irony paper.
ReplyDeleteFor my irony paper, I plan on writing about a subject that has been mentioned many times in politics: abortion. I personally believe abortion is an unjust thing to do, therefore, I will be writing about it from the perspective of one who supports abortion. My paper will be an opinion piece. One of the most common phrases used by people who support this matter is, "freedom of choice" which I may use frequently. The beginning of the paper will seem like a legitimate paper. But as the piece progresses, some of the wording may seem off. For example, the paper may say, "People should have the right to kill small babies, because they have free will." The opinion piece will slowly build up, and at the end it will appear to be a an opinion implying the opposite.
ReplyDeleteFor the irony paper coming up, I am going to discuss the topic of teen video gaming. My paper will be an opinion piece. I am pro video gaming, and I will be talking from the perspective of a person that is against it. I will start off by saying video games are non productive, and time consuming. I will then go on to say that they can cause stress and anger, which can lead to danger, and actions that may be regretted such as punching a wall. Also, I am going to talk about how teens are going through a very important time in their life and could be doing something more productive towards their helath and/or future. Another point that I will make is that video games lead to health risks such as lack of sleep, and over consumption of junk food. I will then sum up my paper with the extreme argument that video games cause teens to live their lives similarly like the themes suggested by video games, including drugs, violence, etc..
ReplyDeleteFor this upcoming Irony assignment I am writing on the topic of war. I am doing this to try to stop war that is always constantly going on around the whole world. I am going to base it off of troops in Iraq kind of. I am writing this like I am a supporter of war and going to make readers take the opposite side of my argument. First I am going to start off saying war always has good in it and a country gets the control they deserve for fighting. Then I am going to talk about the concept of we lose a few, we kill a few who cares. After that I am going to talk about the fact of the losing countrys people either lose all there rights or there villages could be in ruins. Maybe I'll then talk about that people seeing people die might make them mentally tough. Also maybe I'll say somethign outrageous like that if everyone goes to war we'd get exercise and cure our obesity rate.
ReplyDeleteI believe that pollution is doing a great deal to harm the environment and is a big threat to the earth. Therefore, I would like to create an ironic piece that discusses pollution from the point of view of someone who doesn’t believe that it is a bad thing. I would say that pollution is not harming the environment at all and is changing the world for the better. For example, I could say that air and greenhouse gas pollution are not causing global climate change because global climate change does not exist, and the scientists who say that it does are just making it up. Also if global warming did exist and causes the ocean to rise, I’m sure that many people would like to own water front property. I would also compare strangulation and death in animals due to trash pollution as the animals playing with the trash. I would like to do this topic because many people do not take the issue of pollution seriously enough, and I think that my generation is the generation that has to do something about it. By writing this piece I hope to express to people that pollution is threatening our lives, environment and home.
ReplyDeleteI am planning on writing my irony paper on gun control. I am against gun control, and will be writing my irony piece on someone who is an avid proponent of gun control legislation. I would use ironic statements meant to support gun control that really oppose it. Statements like: "Gun control will irradiate all mass and minor shootings from the U.S. by being one-hundred percent effective at keeping guns out of high profile criminals hands. It's not like they have connections that could supply them with any weaponry they desire." and "People who seem completely average but really have a deep, underlying psychiatric condition will most definitely have no chance at obtaining a gun with the new restrictions in place. This doesn’t even matter, because all people who execute random mass shootings are known criminals, not people that fall in to a sudden state of craziness." I believe that this will be a great topic to write about because many people have strong opinions on gun control. The diversity of the people taking sides on gun control will allow me to choose between many different voices, which makes it easier to pick a pro-gun control voice that is effectively able to be imitated and mocked.
ReplyDeleteFor my irony paper I will be discussing how companies test their products on animals. I think this is a problem because I think it is wrong to harm animals by testing drugs and cosmetic on them. I will be telling my opinion on animal testing using the opposite point of view that animal testing is a good thing. I will use irony to make the other point of view sound like I believe in this but in it will actually get the reader to believe the opposite and persuade them that animal testing is a bad thing. My essay will mock the idea of animal testing be good and make them think the opposite of everything written in the essay. My essay will be an opinion piece that is written as what I don’t believe but it will be so ironic that people won't be able to agree with me and really believe my opinion without trying to tell them to. My easy will begin by talking about how animal testing could be debatable and and reasonable. Then I will begin to ease into all the horrifying facts of animal testing being unfair and unsafe. towards the end I will try and make it sound as believable as well make my facts on animal testing sound completely outrageous and make the reader wonder why on earth someone would believe in this and take a completely different view as I wrote but will ironically get them to believe in this same things I do. Saying that animal testing is good for the animals health. Taking the reader into the situation by saying they should test their products on their animals will help the reader realize that if they would never do this to their own animal they wouldn’t want this for their own. Using irony and taking a different approach to present my idea I think will be a good way to persuade the reader to agree in my beliefs.
ReplyDeleteFor the up and coming irony paper, I have selected the highly debatable topic of capital punishment. Personally, I am pro-capital punishment, yet only to a certain extent. I am not for the eye for an eye philosophy so to speak, but in some situations I do feel as though capital punishment is very acceptable. For example, in the case of the 9/11 terrorism planners currently being held in Guantanamo Bay, I think it is very reasonable to put these people to death without a fair trial. Why is it that we had to pay for these people to live in an American facility when they killed thousands of us in one strike? When you think about it, there really is no good reason to keep them alive, and they do not even deserve a fair trial. I am planning to write my paper as a person who is strongly against capital punishment. In the writing I am going to write some things that would make people think as though I am an idiot for being against capital punishment to add the ironic effect. I will be writing this in the form of an opinionated piece. I will begin my paper by saying how cruel the death penalty is and why no one should be subject to it. Then I will begin to bring up topics such as terrorism and serial killers to heighten the irony. Lastly at the end of the paper, my opinion will sound nothing but idiotic, for I will be defending people who have committed horrific crimes. I think that capital punishment should be reinstated into US law for a number of valid reasons.
ReplyDeleteFor the irony paper that we will be writing, I am planning on writing about bullying and its effect on people in today's world. I am completely against bullying and would do all I can to prevent bullying in our school. Although I'm against bullying, ill be writing with the perspective of someone who believes bullying is right. My main factor that will contribute to being a person who believes bullying is right is that kids need to toughen up and understand that life isn't always going to be easy and sometimes you will need to just deal with it. This writing piece based on someone's opinion will consist of many factors that mention why bullying is not a problem. As I mentioned I am 100% against bullying but I am writing a opinion piece of someone who is not against bullying. The idea is to show the reader why bullying is wrong in the end because of the horrible reasons why this person thinks it is right. In the beginning of this piece, the argument will start off slow and then it will start to get more extreme. The main idea of this opinion piece is too prove that in the end, bullying is very wrong and needs to stop in today's world and the facts I will add in the argument will show readers how bad bullying really is.
ReplyDeleteFor the Irony paper coming up I will be writing about steroids in sports and also people that just use them to get them better. I disagree with the use of steroids but will write like I agree with them and think that they are very good for people. I will structure this paper like the one we read in class about gun control and will say both sides of the controversy but supporting one side more. I will be in the voice of a professional athlete that uses steroids and talks about all the benefits to it. I will start this paper with the player talking about him taking steroids for the first time and being a little weary of using them. At the end though he will support them completely and talk about how good they are. That is what my irony paper will be about and how I will structure the paper when writing it.
ReplyDeleteI'm am going to be writing my irony paper on religion extremists. The side I'm going to try and prove is that all religion, if any, should be accepted by all. To do this I'm going to portray a extreme Christian male that is writing a letter to his sons teacher about teaching curtain subjects in his class. My character believes if your not a Christian you are a bad sole, and he doesn't want his wife and kids to be around people with different beliefs. His sons teacher was simple teaching his students other religions and cultures in a middle school history class. He pleads to the teacher in the letter that he doesn't want his kid to be influenced by other religions because their "wrong". The plot twist when he finds out the teacher is of Jewish ethnicity, spiraling into an out of control argument. He ends up taking his kid out of class, and goes to the school pleading to get this teacher fired. The message is that being one sided and narrow minded about religion, while living in one of the most diverse country's in the world, is wrong and arrogant. People always will have their right to freedom of religion, so why try and change that?
ReplyDeleteFor my irony paper, I've chosen to talk about abortion. I think that having the option for abortion should be the choice of the women who this will affect, not the choice of 60 year old politician men who will never have to make that decision. In my paper, I'll argue as one of those men who is giving a speech trying to get a law passed against it. I'll use news clips, real speeches, and articles that are all anti-abortion as references. Lots of anti-abortionists I’ve seen make it seem like they want to give more rights to an unborn child without feelings or emotions than a living woman who would have to care for and give birth to the child. I’ll talk about how the lives of these unborn children are far more important than the emotions or rights of the women who carry them. I’m also going to talk about how even if a woman was raped and got pregnant and wants an abortion because she doesn't want to live with the constant reminder of that experience, she still shouldn't get rid of her unborn child. Someone reading this would think that I have absolutely no respect for women who have to go through this, and that if it doesn't affect me, why should I be the one deciding whether it is legal or not. The reader will see that abortion should be an option available for any woman who is pregnant, and the legalization of it shouldn't be decided by an old man who will never be able to give birth.

For this upcoming assignment, I will be writing an irony paper about Sudbury Valley School, a school with absolutely no set curriculum. I believe that a school should set curriculum in order for students to get a good education. In this paper I will be mocking one of the supervisors from the Sudbury Valley School and say what their opinion would be. I will start off by talking about what the schools has to offer and by the end I will talk about the students’ lives after they graduate. Writing this paper will show students that education is extremely important.
ReplyDeleteFor the irony paper I'm going to write about the issue of payment ineqaulity based on gender. In almost all jobs, it's completely unfair. I will be taking the voice of a man complaining about how much the women at his job get paid. My argument will begin by talking about how if men are doing things that women truly can't, they should be paid more, but will end with how women aren't capable of handling too much money.

I am anti bully and i am going to make it seem that it hepls the bully and gives them poweer and that the bullied are wrong because it helps them get prepared for the real world. I am going to write it as if some one was picking on me and what there perspective would be and try and get inside the brain of a bully.
ReplyDeleteMy irony paper is going to be about having American troops occupying the middle east. I'm taking the side that is against having soldiers being there. I'll be mocking a politician trying to explain what's going on over there and what we've "accomplished" there. The letter will be written towards a magazine company expected to be published to the public. The format will be in a way that I name somethings we've accomplished then a whole bunch of side effects that were caused from the attempting to reach those few accomplishments. This will indirectly tell the reader that maybe what has come out of occupying the middle-east has not been worth it at all. I understand that both sides of this topic have very reasonable arguments and it was hard for me to choose which side to choice with in this article but I believe imitating a clueless politician will be fairly easy.
ReplyDeleteThe social problem that I am discussing in my irony paper is terrorism. I like the project idea, but I feel like what I am writing may be a little bit too extreme. I do not want to be that person that my english teacher has to talk with the principal and the principal has to talk to the government and a mental hospital about how I think irony about terrorism is. Just, think, if I lose that paper, or any of the class for that matter, we are probably all screwed. I realize that terrorism is bad, and I want to emphasize the sarcasm and the romantic and socratic irony about it for the paper, but I also do not want to be the person that says that 9-11 is great and that if someone doesn’t believe in something, kill the person that does.
ReplyDeleteI am trying to take the voice of a terrorist that has been caught from doing really bad terrorism. Not bad as in killing people, but trying to be a “good terrorist”. The character ends up being arrested for walking into his neighbor's house while there is a religious ceremony going on and he decides to screw it all up because he doesn’t believe in what they are doing. He is writing the letter from his jail cell and has managed to get the letter in the local newspaper. It will start off when he is plotting his “evil” scheme and it will build to him actually ruining the ritual and getting arrested for being a clown and then going to jail.
I really like the idea of the paper, but I feel like I should go easy with the remarks. But can somebody tell me, how exactly do you write about the pros of terrorism?!
For my irony paper, I am going to write about assisted suicide. It is my personal belief that in some situations, assisted suicide is a decision that should be possible for those who have a terminal disease or other medical issue similar to that. In my paper I will be taking the viewpoint of someone who believes that assisted suicide shouldn’t be allowed. I want to write the paper as someone who has a relative or close friend who has the option of assisted suicide, and write about why that person should not be allowed the option. I plan on writing in an extremely exaggerated fashion, but with a completely sincere tone. I might include things such as “My grandmother shouldn’t be allowed the option of assisted suicide because although she is unable to see me or hear me, her presence means a lot to me, and she should stick it out to the end for my benefit.” I will most likely start out by including small, almost logical reasons for why assisted suicide is reasonable, then gradually move on to reasons that sound for the most part ridiculous, but the whole time keeping the sincere tone.
ReplyDeleteMy irony paper will be about how I think that cigarettes and tobacco companies are great, because in reality I think it's awful and disgusting. I think that because it's such a problem in our country that it would be a good topic to discuss. My paper will be a speech, based off a story; I'm a big time tobacco company CEO, and I'm going into schools across the country advertising our cigarettes and I will begin it by asking questions, and then building to how great they are when really they're awful and they do nothing but hurt the people using them and even hurting the people around them, slowly killing them. I do not think cigarettes are good for you at all because they're bad for your health and they detrimental to your long time health and the others around you. So my irony paper will be about how great, smoking or chewing tobacco is.

I am against dropping out of high school so therefore i will write my paper on how I agree with dropping out of high school. the story will be based on a madeup character who became pregnant in high school and dropped out of high school to take care of her baby. some social problems I will be focusing on is teen pregnancy, poor grades and poor economy.
